Why Every Student Deserves Free Therapy: Closing the Mental Health Gap in Schools

When a young person finally says out loud that they are struggling, the next moment decides everything. If help is right there, that courage turns into care. If it is not, the door quietly closes, sometimes for years. Far too often, cost and access slam that door shut. At Project Blackbird, we decided to keep it open.

To date, we have funded a full year of free therapy for 700 students, reached more than 48,000 young people, and worked with 87 schools. This is why that model matters, and why we believe every student deserves the same.

The gap is enormous, and quiet

Most young people who need mental health care never receive it. The reasons are painfully practical. Families cannot afford it. There are not enough providers. Waitlists stretch for months. Transportation, insurance, and stigma stack up until getting help feels impossible. So students carry it alone, and the cost of that silence shows up in their grades, their friendships, and their futures.

Why school-based therapy works

Schools are where young people already are. Meeting students there removes most of the barriers that keep them from care in the first place.

  • Access. No separate appointment across town, no missing work for a parent, no waitlist that outlasts the crisis.
  • Early support. Reaching a student before a hard season becomes an emergency changes the whole trajectory.
  • Less stigma. When mental health is part of the school community, asking for help stops feeling like an admission of failure.
  • Trust. Care that comes through a place students already know is care they are more likely to accept.

What “funded for a year” really means

When we say we funded a year of free therapy for 700 students, we mean we paid for it so that cost would never be the reason a young person went without. Not every student enrolled, and that is the point. The care was there, waiting, no matter who reached for it. Removing the price tag removes the hardest no.

Therapy is one piece of a bigger approach

Access to a therapist changes individual lives. Changing the culture around mental health changes whole schools. That is why our work pairs therapy access with storytelling, honest panels, and resource fairs that connect students to support in their own community. The film opens the room. The therapy keeps the door open after we leave.

Help us keep the door open

Every student we fund is one more young person who gets to say yes to help. If you believe cost should never stand between a student and their mental health, support this work or bring Project Blackbird to your school.
