PROJECT BLACKBIRD INC (“Project Blackbird,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN 92-0678276) working in youth mental health through storytelling, school and university programming, therapy access, and community resource events.
We take privacy seriously. Much of our work involves young people and conversations about mental health, and we treat that information with the care it deserves. This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do about it.
Information we collect
Information you give us directly. Your name, email address, phone number, mailing address, and any message you send when you contact us, sign up for our newsletter, register for an event, apply to a program, volunteer, join a mailing list, or make a donation.
Donation information. When you donate, payment is processed by our third-party payment processors. We receive confirmation of your gift and the contact details you provide. We do not receive or store your full payment card number.
Shop purchases. If you buy merchandise, we collect the information needed to fulfill your order, including shipping address and order contents. Payment is handled by our payment processor.
Program and event information. If you participate in a Project Blackbird program, summit, tour stop, or resource fair, we may collect registration details and, where you choose to provide them, your story or feedback.
Information collected automatically. Like most websites, ours collects standard technical information such as IP address, browser type, device type, pages visited, and referring site. This is used to keep the site working and understand what is useful to visitors.
Mental health and sensitive information
Some people share personal experiences with us — through story collection, program participation, or simply by writing to us. We do not publish, quote, or share anyone’s personal story without their explicit permission. Where a story is shared publicly with consent, we honor any request to anonymize or withdraw it.
Project Blackbird is not a crisis service and does not provide clinical care. Information you send us is not a confidential clinical record and is not protected by therapist–patient privilege. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).
Where we connect participants to therapy through partner providers, those providers hold the clinical relationship and their own privacy practices and HIPAA obligations apply to your treatment records. We do not receive your clinical records.
Children’s and student privacy
Our work frequently reaches people under 18.
- We do not knowingly collect personal information online from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. If you believe a child under 13 has given us information, contact us and we will delete it promptly.
- When we work in schools, the school or district controls student data and we operate under its direction and applicable law, including FERPA. We do not use student information for advertising, and we do not sell it.
- Young people participating in our programming are not required to disclose personal mental health information to take part.
How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Deliver programs, events, and the services you ask for
- Respond to your messages and requests
- Process donations and send tax receipts and acknowledgments
- Fulfill merchandise orders
- Send newsletters and updates you have opted into (every email has an unsubscribe link)
- Report in aggregate to funders and partners on our impact
- Meet legal, tax, grant, and accounting obligations
- Maintain the security and functioning of our website and systems
We do not sell your information
Project Blackbird does not sell, rent, or trade personal information. We share it only:
- With service providers who work on our behalf — payment processing, email delivery, website hosting, CRM, and similar — and only as needed to do that work
- With program partners where you have asked us to connect you to a service, such as a therapy partner
- Where required by law, or to protect the safety of a person at risk of serious harm
- In aggregated or de-identified form that does not identify you, for grant reporting and impact measurement
Google user data
Project Blackbird operates internal administrative tools that connect to the organization’s own Google Workspace account using Google OAuth. These tools help us manage our email, grant and sponsorship records, scheduling, and reporting.
This access is to our own organizational accounts. Only authorized Project Blackbird staff sign in and grant this access. Visitors to this website are never asked to connect a Google account, and we do not access any member of the public’s personal Google account.
Scopes we request, and why:
| Access | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Read, compose, send, and organize Gmail messages | Manage organizational correspondence — drafting, sending, sorting, and tracking replies on our own accounts |
| Google Sheets | Maintain internal funding, partnership, and program trackers |
| Google Drive (files created by the app only) | Save and retrieve documents the tool itself produces |
| Google Forms (form content and responses) | Build and read responses to our own intake and registration forms |
Project Blackbird’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Specifically:
- Google user data is used only to provide and improve these internal administrative functions
- It is never sold, and never used for advertising
- It is not used to develop, improve, or train generalized artificial intelligence or machine learning models
- It is not transferred to others except as necessary to provide these functions, for security purposes, or to comply with applicable law
- Access credentials are stored on organization-controlled systems, and access can be revoked at any time by the account owner at myaccount.google.com/permissions
Cookies and analytics
Our website uses cookies to keep the site working, remember your preferences, and understand site usage in aggregate. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; some parts of the site may not work properly if you do.
You can unsubscribe from our mailing lists at any time using the link at the bottom of any email, or by contacting us. We will still send transactional messages you have asked for, such as donation receipts and event confirmations.
How long we keep information
We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purpose it was collected, or as required by law. Donation records are retained as long as tax and grant-reporting rules require. You can ask us to delete information we are not legally required to keep.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards to protect personal information, including access controls and limiting staff access to those who need it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you may ask us to:
- Tell you what personal information we hold about you
- Correct information that is wrong
- Delete information we are not required to keep
- Stop sending you marketing email
- Withdraw consent for a story or image you previously allowed us to use
Email info@projectblackbirdinc.org and we will respond within a reasonable time. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act or the GDPR; we honor those where they apply.
